“Silent Service” is the name given to the submarine force of the United States Navy. The name comes for the restrictive release of information about operations performed by these boats. USS Bowfin’s first patrol was a successfully completed secret mission called BAKER. In 1924, the Secretary of the Navy adopted the insignia shown on our Silent Service Collection, to be worn by officers and men on vessels like the USS Bowfin.
